Taurine: A Possible Elixir for Anti-Ageing?

Introduction

According to an international team of scientists, a nutrient called taurine, that is usually found in foods with proteins such as fish or meat, can delay the ageing process. The researchers discovered, through giving taurine supplements to mice and monkeys, that their lifespan and health improved up to 12%. The findings of this study are significant in human trails, and they say it is noteworthy enough for testing the effects of taurine as an anti-ageing therapy.

What is taurine?

Taurine is one type of amino acid. It commonly found in the foods that have high protein content, like eggs, meat, and fish. It plays a crucial role in our body as it supports the immune and nervous systems. Additionally, it supports energy production and physical & cognitive function. By adding taurine to energy drinks, which helps with performance, and is hypothesized to help with mental and athletic performance.

The Study

The research done by the team looked at blood samples and measured the taurine concentration in mice, monkeys, and humans at different ages. Approximately 250 female and male mice of 14 months old, around 45 years of age in human age, were fed with half a taurine supplement, while the other half were given a control solution. The enhanced lifespan found in female mice was equivalent to seven or eight human years, while that of males was closer to three or four additional months.

Significance of the Study

The research suggests that taurine levels go down as we age, indicating that increasing taurine to a youthful level in old age could be an effective anti-ageing strategy. However, the researchers have noted that although higher taurine levels are associated with healthier people and lower inflammation, it is not clear whether taurine leads to the ageing process or is just a part of it.

Editorial

Taurine‘s anti-ageing and health benefits, detailed in a recent study, offer excellent potential for healthy ageing. As human life expectancy increases, focusing on extending the healthy years will be among the significant medical challenges and epidemiological achievements of our era. While this study is still in its early stages, it presents an opportunity to find solutions for many age-related issues. However, it is crucial to note that human trials are needed to evaluate how taurine impacts the ageing process proactively.

Advice

Although taurine will not stop the ageing process, it could be a supplement that helps maintain your quality of life longer. It is vital to incorporate nutrient-rich foods such as fish, meat, and eggs in your meals. Additionally, with the ever-growing market of taurine supplements, ensure that you care for yourself – age healthily.
