Rob Burrow Recounts His MND Diagnosis
Rugby League star, Rob Burrow, publicly revealed for the first time, details of his Motor Neurone Disease (MND) diagnosis in an ITV documentary titled, Lindsey & Rob: Living With MND. The documentary created awareness about the debilitating illness and showed a glimpse into Burrow’s life, including the support of his wife and their journey to raise money for their local MND center in Seacroft via the Leeds Marathon.
The Diagnosis
During the documentary, Burrow revealed how he first experienced signs of the disease when he began slurring his speech at an awards event. His teammates noticed the issue and recommended he visit the team’s doctor. After examination, the nurse broke the news to Burrow and his wife, Lindsey, that he had a significant health problem. Burrow’s father, Geoff, broke down in tears when Burrow told him the devastating news.
When he was diagnosed, Burrow stated that he took the news better than his wife, Lindsey. He was happy that it was him and not anyone else in the family who had the disease. It takes courage to be able to share your diagnosis with the world, and by going public with it early in December 2019, Burrow has helped raise awareness of the illness and its impact.
MND Symptoms
According to the NHS website, early symptoms of MND include weakness in your ankle or leg that can cause tripping or difficulty climbing stairs, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing some foods, a weak grip that can cause you to drop things, muscle cramps and twitches, weight loss, and difficulty controlling emotions in inappropriate situations.
Living with MND
Burrow’s wife, Lindsey’s marathon journey for MND was also featured in the documentary. She carried her husband around their home, and the television camera captured the emotional moments of their life together, battling MND. They hope to raise even more money for the MND center in Seacroft where Burrow is currently receiving treatment.
