Review: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Introduction

As the seventh installment in the Transformers movie franchise, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the newest addition to the series, directed by Steven Caple Jr. and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The film has been classified as an action, adventure, and science fiction movie with a PG-13 rating for its language and intense robot violence. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts explores the evolution of Optimus Prime and introduces a new biomechanical gorilla Optimus Primal, aiming for a rejuvenated classic experience. The franchise has been known for its CGI spectacle of Autobots and Decepticons battling. However, the latest addition to the series has left the audience disappointed with its misguided plot and lackluster characters.

The Good and the Bad

The film starts with promise and an enjoyable nostalgic touch with the resurrected Optimus Prime and his new friend, Optimus Primal. Although the character of Optimus Primal seems implausible due to his mechanical features, the situation is thankfully dealt with humor rather than attempting to explain his existence. The movie does well in terms of its special effects and CGI work, which was evident in the beauty and detail of the robots. The characterization is mediocre, with the human actors, Dominique Fishback and Anthony Ramos, trying their best to share their scenes with the robots. The premise of the film is exciting; there is an amusing inversion where the alien robots are trying to save humans instead of vice versa. However, the plot is so densely packed with twists and turns that it becomes incomprehensible. Despite its potential, the frenzied pace eventually disrupts the overall momentum of the narrative, leaving the audience confused and disengaged.

Philosophical Discussion

The Transformers series has been a popular franchise among audiences worldwide, but it is worth considering if the franchise’s disconnect between logic and spectacle is a viable approach. While its lack of logic can make sense when creating a fictional, science-fictional world, its attempts at blending spectacle with an occasionally coherent plot hinder the series’ overall potential. Rise of the Beasts showcases the franchise’s universe’s absurdity with the introduction of the odd character of Optimus Primal. The character’s existence intentionally makes no sense, and instead of trying to explain it, the film uses humor to acknowledge its implausibility. This scene is thought-provoking, as it raises questions about humanity’s obsession with understanding and logic: Is everything in life designed for a logical understanding? Rise of the Beasts offers a unique way to consider these concepts.

Editorial and Advice

Despite Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ innovative storyline and impressive special effects, it ultimately fails to engage the audience due to its rushed and convoluted plot. The robot battles also feel unoriginal and exhausting. Fans of the franchise would appreciate the nostalgic touch of the classic robots, but overall, the movie doesn’t live up to its full potential. The film’s fast pace creates a rushed feeling, leaving many questions unanswered and unexplored. It is disappointing that the film didn’t focus on exploring new storylines and instead strayed away from its initial premise.

Thus, we advise the filmmakers to focus on creating a more concrete characterization and a well-structured plot. While the Transformers‘ universe is unusual and eccentric, it is the human characters that mostly control the franchise’s storyline. It was challenging to form connections with the secondary characters and empathize with their struggles, detracting from the overall movie experience. To make the franchise prosper, there should be an incentive towards exploring themes that speak to the human experience rather than focusing on chaotic robot fights. We hope that the people behind the franchise will take this film’s negative feedback constructively and strive towards creating a well-crafted Transformers universe.
