Tories consider sending migrants 4,000 miles to Ascension Island if Rwanda plan fails

Rishi Sunak’s government is reportedly considering sending migrants to Ascension Island, a remote British overseas territory located 4,000 miles away, in case the government’s policy of deporting migrants to Rwanda is deemed unlawful by the Supreme Court. Ascension Island, with a population of only 900, is being re-evaluated as a potential location to process asylum seekers. The government is also said to be in negotiations with several other African countries about similar deportation agreements.

Plan B: Ascension Island

Ascension Island is being considered as a “plan B” in case the Supreme Court rules against the government’s policy of deporting migrants to Rwanda. Home Office minister Sarah Dines confirmed that the government is exploring additional measures and contingency options. However, she also reiterated the government’s confidence in the lawfulness of the Rwanda policy.

Why Ascension Island?:

The government previously rejected the idea of sending migrants to Ascension Island in 2020. However, the recent reconsideration suggests that the government is open to exploring all possibilities given the urgency of the crisis in the English Channel. Ascension Island is not the only option being considered, as the government is also in talks with other African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Namibia, Morocco, and Niger.

Criticism from Labour and Campaigners

The latest proposed plans have been criticized by Labour’s shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper, who called them “headline chasing announcements that are never delivered.” Previous plans to send migrants to Ascension Island were deemed a “logistical nightmare” due to issues such as inadequate water supplies and a lack of medical infrastructure.

Campaigners, including the chief executive of the Refugee Council, Enver Solomon, condemn these proposals as further demonization of migrants escaping conflict and persecution in countries like Afghanistan, Sudan, and Iran.

The Bibby Stockholm Barge

In addition to considering offshore processing options, the government is also moving forward with plans to house asylum seekers on the Bibby Stockholm barge. The first group of up to 500 migrants is expected to board the vessel docked in Portland Port, Dorset, as soon as Monday, despite local opposition and safety concerns.

Increased Penalties and Deterrence

The government is also taking steps to deter Channel crossings and unauthorized migration. They plan to increase fines for employers who hire unauthorized migrants and live in properties with them. Civil penalties will be raised up to a maximum of £45,000 per worker for a first breach and £60,000 for repeat offenders.

Editorial and Advice

The consideration of Ascension Island as a potential destination for asylum seekers raises several ethical and practical questions. The remote island has a small population and lacks necessary infrastructure, such as medical facilities and adequate water supplies. Even if logistical challenges were to be overcome, sending migrants thousands of miles away to a remote location raises concerns about the rights and well-being of the individuals involved.

While it is understandable that the government is seeking solutions to address the ongoing crisis in the English Channel, it is crucial that any approach taken is both lawful and respects the rights of asylum seekers. Asylum seekers are individuals who have fled persecution and are seeking protection, and their treatment should be in line with international human rights standards.

The government should prioritize more sustainable and humane solutions, such as strengthening collaboration with other European countries and improving the processing of asylum claims. A fair and efficient asylum system that respects the principles of dignity, fairness, and respect for human rights should be the ultimate goal.

Furthermore, the government must be transparent about its actions and engage in open dialogue with the public, civil society organizations, and the international community. By doing so, they can foster trust and understanding while seeking solutions to the complex issue of migration.
