2023 Tony Awards: Celebrating the Biggest Names on Broadway

The 2023 Tony Awards celebrated the biggest shows and stars on Broadway in a spectacular showdown. The red carpet was graced by some of the brightest talents of the year as they gathered to commemorate the accomplishments of the performing arts industry. The event was hosted unscripted by Ariana DeBose, who opened the show with a Broadway medley, dancing her way through a blank script in support of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.

Standing in Solidarity

In solidarity with WGA writers, Lin-Manuel Miranda pulled his performance scheduled for the event. DeBose took a moment to acknowledge the hard work of those who had found a compromise to keep the show going. “For every single person that had a hand in finding that compromise, I say a full-throated thank you!”

Highlights of the Night

One of the biggest highlights of the night was the award for Best Lead Actress in a Play, which was won by Jodie Comer for her role in Prima Facie. Comer had made her Broadway debut with this one-woman play that dealt with sexual assault and victimhood. Her achievement brings her halfway towards the prestigious EGOT title.

The much sought-after Best Musical award went to Kimberly Akimbo, which also bagged several more awards such as Best Book of a Musical. Brit actor J Harrison Ghee won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his performance in Some Like It Hot.
