Cormac McCarthy, author of The Road, dies aged 89
Renowned American novelist and Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy passed away on Tuesday, July 20, at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Natural causes were cited as the cause of his death. Best known for his works, The Road and No Country for Old Men, both of which were adapted into blockbuster films, McCarthy was described as a very private individual. His UK-based publisher, Pan Macmillan, described McCarthy as “one of the world’s most influential and renowned writers”.
McCarthy’s literary legacy
McCarthy was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1933. His first novel, The Orchard Keeper, was published in 1965, marking the beginning of his long and illustrious career. Over the next six decades, McCarthy wrote a total of ten novels, several screenplays, and numerous short stories, gaining international recognition for his unique style of writing.
McCarthy’s literary works covered a vast range of topics and genres. Most of his novels focused on post-apocalyptic worlds, violent tales that described the American frontier. The Road, his most famous work which was published in 2006, tells the story of a father and son’s journey as they navigate a perilous world after the apocalypse. It won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2007.
Another notable work of his is No Country for Old Men, which tells the story of a drug deal that goes wrong in the desolate Texas desert. It was adapted for the screen and became a box office hit. The film starring Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones went on to win four Oscars, including Best Picture.
An illustrious career of a private person
Although McCarthy became a literary legend, he was known to be a very private individual who shunned the spotlight. During his career, he only conducted a handful of media interviews, preferring instead to spend his time writing his next masterpiece. When he did give interviews, he was candid about his lack of enthusiasm for them, citing that they were not good for his mental space.
Despite McCarthy’s reputation as a private person, Stephen King, the renowned American author, paid tribute to him on Twitter, calling him “maybe the greatest American novelist of my time.”
