Ireland mourns the loss of legendary singer Christy Dignam
The passing of legendary Irish rock band Aslan‘s frontman Christy Dignam has left Ireland in mourning. Dignam, who was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer in 2013, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 13th at the age of 63. His death was announced by his daughter, Kiera, on Facebook, who expressed the family’s request for privacy during this difficult period.
Tribute by President Michael D Higgins
Irish President Michael D Higgins expressed his sadness over the loss of Christy Dignam, saying that people across Ireland and beyond would also feel the same. He extended his deepest condolences to Christy’s wife, Kathryn, to his daughter Kiera, to his bandmates in Aslan, and to his wide circle of family and friends.
In his tribute, he acknowledged the contribution that Christy and his Aslan bandmates made to the cultural life of Ireland for the last forty years. Higgins lauded Aslan’s live performances and their remarkable connection with their audience, with Dignam playing a central role.

As per Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Dignam was a “legend of Irish music and a great Dubliner”. Dignam and Aslan were known for their well-loved albums and hit singles such as ‘This Is’ and ‘Crazy World’ and their live shows. Their passionate performances made every time memorable for the audience.
