Manhunt: How DCI Colin Sutton Caught Serial Killer Levi Bellfield

Introduction

The renowned British Television series ‘Manhunt’ chronicles the story of former Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton and his team as they catch the notorious serial killer Levi Bellfield. In this drama series, Colin Sutton is portrayed by Martin Clunes, and it is adapted from Colin Sutton’s book of the same name. The show first aired in 2019 and has returned for its second season. In this report, we will discuss how Colin Sutton caught the serial killer Levi Bellfield and the efforts made by him to bring justice to the victims.

Who is Colin Sutton?

DCI Colin Sutton is a renowned investigating officer who served the Metropolitan Police between January 2003 and January 2011. He led over 30 successful murder investigations, including the notorious Amélie Delagrange murder case. Amélie Delagrange was a French student who was murdered while walking home from a night out with friends at Twickenham Green, London, in 2004. With very little evidence, Sutton’s painstaking approach and the diligence of his fellow officers gradually led to breakthroughs in the case. Later, Sutton caught the notorious serial killer Levi Bellfield, who had murdered two women and a schoolgirl.

How Did Colin Sutton Catch the Notorious Killer?

According to Colin Sutton, a breakthrough came when police investigated the murder of Amélie Delagrange. Her mobile phone, stolen during the attack, was used in Walton-on-Thames, where Milly Dowler, a 13-year-old girl, had been abducted and murdered in March 2002. After trawling hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, the police identified a white Ford van, which was present near the scene of Amélie’s murder then later in Walton-on-Thames. Colin Sutton pursued this van with “everything he could throw at it”, and eventually, it was identified as a Ford Courier, manufactured between 1996 and 2000. There were 25,000 of these models in the UK, and Sutton’s team did their best to examine each one of them.

Conclusion: Justice Served

Colin Sutton’s dedication and his perseverance helped him solve both cases, Amélie’s and Milly’s murder cases. After Sutton’s investigation, Levi Bellfield was finally arrested, tried, and sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering these two innocent young women, and later he was convicted of attempted murder. Sutton’s efforts brought justice to the victims and their families, and it was a great triumph for the criminal justice system. However, this report also makes one ponder the state of society, where such heinous crimes occur, and the efforts required to bring the criminals to justice. It is the duty of the law enforcement authorities and citizens to work together to ensure that justice is done and to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
