Champions Roundup: How Chesterfield Organizations are Supporting Our Town
By Josh Marsh – 20 October 2023
Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 200 organizations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, have been sharing uplifting stories throughout October on how they are supporting the people in our area. These organizations have been creating connections across the community to strengthen local groups, improve accessibility, and even teach people how to save a life. Here is a roundup of some of the inspiring initiatives currently underway in Chesterfield.
Save a Life Scheme receives record sign-ups at Chesterfield College
The Community Save a Life Scheme (CSALS), a local charity, recently visited Chesterfield College to celebrate the fantastic uptake of their program by both staff and students. Nick, a representative from CSALS, was astonished by the number of people who have been involved, stating, “The support and interest from the college has been incredible.” Participants, both staff and students, shared that they felt more confident in their ability to handle difficult situations after completing the course. Nick adds, “Having the basic lifesaving skills that the course equips them with gives them enough knowledge to save a life.” This program serves as an excellent example of how organizations can empower individuals to make a difference in their communities by providing them with essential skills.
Support Dog’s successful visit to Chesterfield FC
When the Community Trust took over the running of Chesterfield FC, one of their aims was to make the stadium accessible for everyone. In line with this goal, the club recently welcomed a support dog named Gordon, accompanied by his socializer Pauline McAllister, to experience a matchday at the SMH Group Stadium. The visit was a resounding success, with Pauline expressing her gratitude and stating, “We didn’t have any worries at all. The whole thing was lovely. I can’t thank everybody enough.” This initiative not only promotes inclusivity but also raises awareness about the important role support dogs play in enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities. It sends a powerful message that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy community events without barriers.
Vicar Lane to host Pumpkin Patch this weekend
Vicar Lane, a popular shopping center, is hosting a Halloween-themed event to bring families together. The Pumpkin Patch, taking place on Saturday, October 21st, promises a range of fun activities for all ages. Visitors can pick pumpkins from the patch (while stocks last) and participate in spooky activities organized by a trio of witches. Additionally, a themed face painter will be available to transform visitors into their favorite spine-chilling characters. Sarah Bowler, Tenant and Community Liaison Manager, expresses her excitement, stating, “We are so excited to welcome local families back to Vicar Lane to get involved in lots of exciting Halloween activities. It’s sure to be a great day out for all!” This event not only provides entertainment but also contributes to the sense of community in Chesterfield.
Chatsworth Walk connects nursing students and carers
Derbyshire Voluntary Action’s Community Chesterfield project recently organized the Chatsworth Walk, a picturesque journey from Baslow to Chatsworth House in the Peak District. This event aimed to provide an opportunity for important conversations about the experiences of unpaid carers and their role in healthcare. The walk, a partnership event with the University of Derby and Derbyshire Carers Association, brought together future healthcare professionals and carers for a day of connection, mindfulness, and dialogue. By facilitating conversations and understanding between carers, staff, and students, this event highlighted the importance of compassionate and effective healthcare. Jennifer Raschbauer, Community Chesterfield Project Director, commented, “It was a lovely day with some brilliant conversations. It was wonderful to hear some of the shared stories and to see people learning.” This initiative exemplifies the power of community, empathy, and open communication.
Conclusion
These stories of support and collaboration in Chesterfield demonstrate the incredible work being done by organizations within the community. From providing life-saving skills to fostering inclusivity to organizing community events, these initiatives contribute to the growth and well-being of the town. They remind us of the importance of coming together, not only to address immediate needs but also to foster long-term relationships and understanding.
By supporting initiatives like the ones mentioned above, individuals can actively participate in building a stronger, more connected community. Whether it is by taking part in educational programs, advocating for accessibility, or attending community events, each person has the power to make a difference. The experiences shared by those involved in these initiatives highlight the positive impact they have had, both on individuals and on the wider community.
It is essential for individuals to stay informed about the work being done by organizations in their community. By engaging with and supporting these initiatives, residents can further contribute to the overall well-being and growth of their town. Chesterfield serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals, organizations, and the community come together with a shared vision of creating a better future.
