Three killed and several injured in Nottingham van rampage
A van rampage in Nottingham city centre resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries. Around 4am on Tuesday, June 13, police received reports of a vehicle hitting pedestrians in Ilkeston Road, leading to the discovery of two people dead in the street. Officers were then called to Milton Street, following reports that a van had attempted to run over three people. A man was found dead on Magdala Road in the suburbs near Sherwood. A 31-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder after a police chase involving armed officers. The Nottingham Express Transit (NET) tram network was suspended, and several roads were closed. The investigation is ongoing.
Eye Witnesses recount the event
Lyn Haggitt, who witnessed the incident, said that the van driver ‘went straight into’ the pedestrians knocked down and didn’t even bother to turn. She added that the man was (badly hurt) but could stand up and walked away from the scene.
A student who also witnessed the event told GB News that they woke up at about 5.30am to what sounded like gunshots, and when they looked out the window, they saw armed police running out of what appeared to be an undercover car. They witnessed the arrest of the suspect and saw the police pull out an enormous knife from the back of the van.
Police and public response
The police are urging the public to remain patient during the investigation. Although there are no reports of terrorism, the police are working to establish the exact circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and Robert Jenrick, MP for Newark in Nottinghamshire, have expressed their support for the police and mourned the loss of lives. Nottingham local authorities have shut down several businesses around the affected areas and have asked the public to avoid the region.
Analysis and Editorial
The brutal van rampage that has killed three people in Nottingham‘s city centre is a devastating reminder of the impact of violence on innocent people’s lives. This tragic event shows the need for everyone to work together to prevent violent behaviour. Addressing the root causes of violence involves changes in personal attitudes, enforcement, and community involvement to foster peaceful and inclusive societies.
Investigations and background checks on individuals, especially those with records of criminal behaviour, should be intensified. It is also pertinent to keep updating security measures, both public and private, to ensure that they are effective in deterring criminal and violent behaviour. Law enforcement agencies must be equipped with the necessary resources for surveillance, security, de-escalation procedures and, of course, swift and adequate response in case of emergencies.
Advice for the public
As the investigation into the Nottingham tragedy continues, the public must remain vigilant. If you have any information relating to the incident, the police are urging you to come forward with your concerns and report anything suspicious. It is essential to stay up to date with the latest news on the investigation and to adhere to any security measures set in place by the authorities.
