Royal Navy Sailor Embarks on Epic Cycling Journey to Support Son’s Healthcare
Introduction
In a heartwarming effort to support his son’s ongoing healthcare, Rhys Bingham, a naval engineer serving in the Royal Navy, is taking on a challenging cycling journey from his childhood home in Leicester to his current residence in Portsmouth. Joined by a group of childhood friends from the Syston Rugby Club, Bingham will ride a grueling 170 miles over two days to raise funds for the therapy his four-year-old son, Rudy, requires.
Rudy’s Story
Rudy, a happy and playful child, faced difficulties with walking, which raised concerns for his parents, Fiona and Rhys. Following medical assessments, Rudy underwent selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery on the National Health Service (NHS) to improve his mobility and alleviate his pain. The surgery has already shown remarkable progress, enabling Rudy to walk upstairs and independently swing on a swing. However, to maintain his progress, he requires physiotherapy four times a week, as well as hydrotherapy. Unfortunately, much of this therapy must be paid for privately, incurring significant costs for the family.
The Fundraising Efforts
With the aim of supporting Rudy’s ongoing therapy, the Bingham family, along with their network of friends, has been actively fundraising. Through events organized by Rhys’s colleagues on his ship, HMS Protector, they have managed to raise over £20,000. Additionally, they have received support from children’s charity Tree of Hope, which specializes in assisting families in fundraising for healthcare needs. The funds raised are already being utilized to cover the expenses of Rudy’s therapies, which currently amount to approximately £1,000 per month.
The Cycling Challenge
The highlight of the fundraising efforts is the two-day cycling challenge undertaken by Rhys Bingham and his childhood friends. Starting from Leicester, they will pedal their way to Portsmouth, with their final destination being Southsea Castle. Despite their limited cycling experience, the group is determined to overcome the physical and mental challenges that await them on this ambitious journey. The anticipated completion of the ride is Sunday evening.
Closing Thoughts
The commitment and dedication demonstrated by Rhys Bingham, his friends, and supporters exemplify the strength of human spirit and the importance of community in times of need. Their efforts to provide Rudy with the necessary therapies is not only a testament to their love and care but also an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
As we witness this remarkable endeavor, it is important to recognize the immense burden that families with healthcare needs face. The high costs associated with specialized therapies often place an additional financial strain on these families already dealing with the emotional and physical toll of caring for their loved ones. It is through the support of organizations like Tree of Hope and the generosity of individuals that families like the Binghams can find solace and assistance.
How You Can Help

In witnessing the inspiring journey of Rhys Bingham and his friends, we are reminded of the profound impact that individuals can have when they come together to support a noble cause. Their determination and resilience serve as a testament to the power of human connection, and their efforts should encourage us all to contribute in any way we can to help those in need.
