From Tokyo to Italy in 766 days: A Tom Gale story
Tokyo 2020 and the Pre-Games Setback
Tom Gale, a 24-year-old high jumper from Bath, England, experienced a rollercoaster journey in his athletic career. Just before the Covid-19 pandemic, Gale cleared a personal best of 2.33m, securing the Olympic qualifying mark and earning a spot on the plane to Tokyo 2020. Although he finished 11th overall in his Olympic debut, there was a lingering concern that would soon disrupt his career for over two years. It was an injury in his left patellar tendon, a condition called tendonitis, which reached its peak during the Tokyo final, causing him excruciating pain.
Stepping into the stadium for the final, Gale had a premonition that it would be his last competition for quite some time. Little did he know that this injury would lead to a series of setbacks and a long hiatus from his sport.
A Multiple-Year Struggle
After the Tokyo Olympics, Gale entered a phase of constant injury and chronic knee pain, which severely impacted both his physical and mental well-being. The pain persisted even after they managed to handle it following the Games. In May 2022, he tore his right patellar tendon, resulting in further rehabilitation and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to promote healing. However, Gale faced another setback as he tore his tendon once again, prompting three more PRP injections.
Throughout this arduous journey, Gale found himself engaged in a continuous mental battle where progress seemed fleeting. Taking one step forward often felt followed by two steps back. However, the turning point arrived in Christmas 2022 when he summoned the strength to confront the darkness surrounding him. Gale leaned on the support of his loved ones, including his friends and family, and rediscovered his belief in his talent.
The Healing Power of Mental Health
In the midst of his lowest point, Gale decided to prioritize his mental health and took a break from training to focus on recovery. He immersed himself in journaling and reaffirmed his faith in his talent and potential. He wrote that the struggles he was experiencing did not define him, emphasizing that his talent was still present and waiting to be expressed.
Gale acknowledged the tremendous support he received and recognized the important role it played in his journey towards recovery. He expressed gratitude for the people around him who provided assistance and understood the significance of team effort.
Recovery and Regaining Consistency
Feeling physically and mentally stronger, Gale made the decision to relocate from Bath to Loughborough in May, where he now trains alongside British high jump partners Joel Clarke-Khan and Morgan Lake. With a gradual return to training, the Olympian experienced positive progress in both his physical abilities and mental resilience.
In September, after a gap of 766 days since his last competition, Gale participated in the Palio Citta’ della Quercia in Rovereto, Italy, and emerged victorious. Although he expressed satisfaction with his performance, he still strives for more, aiming to become the British number one with a jump of 2.27m.
Looking Ahead: Paris 2024 and Beyond
Gale now sets his sights on the Paris 2024 Olympics, oozing confidence that he will be competitive and give his all in the next year leading up to the games. Despite the pain he endured in Tokyo and subsequent setbacks, Gale’s determination remains unwavering. He acknowledges that he has the ability to overcome challenges and achieve success even in the face of adversity.
