Lifestyle Foreign Office Issues Spain and Portugal Travel Warning as Storm Oscar Brings Severe Weather
The UK Foreign Office has issued a travel warning to people who are planning to visit certain areas of Spain and Portugal due to a storm named Storm Oscar. This warning came as different parts of both countries prepared to face heavy rain and strong winds that could possibly lead to chaos. The Foreign Office has advised tourists to check with their tour operator or accommodation provider before travel to ensure their safety.
Areas Affected by Storm Oscar
The Canary Islands in Spain such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Valverde, as well as Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Azores in Portugal are expected to face the worst of the storm. The storm is predicted to hit the Canary Islands between Monday, June 5 and Thursday, June 8, with heavy rain and strong winds causing gusts of up to 55mph. Tourists in Lanzarote and Fuertaventura are slightly safer than other areas, however, rainfall is still expected to hit these areas later in the week. Madeira will be facing heavy winds of 68mph and “strong and persistent” rainfall according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere. And those in the Azores may also face thunderstorms.
Travel Advice
People have been urged to check before they travel and make sure they are following the safety guidelines. The FCDO advises Brits to check with their tour operator or accommodation provider before travel. It states: “You should check with your tour operator or accommodation provider before you travel and follow the instructions of local authorities.” According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency, gusts of up to 55mph can be dangerous and cause chaos, so it is important to take safety precautions or avoid travelling in these areas during this period.
Editorial and Advice
While it is understandable to want to go on holiday during this season, safety and security should be given top priority. Though tourism is crucial for the economy, it is still vital to make sure that everything is in good order and tourists are safe and secure. During storms like Oscar, it is important to take note of the warnings issued by the authorities as they help to keep everyone safe. It is advisable to follow the weather updates, follow the guidance of local authorities and tour operators, stay indoors during the storm and avoid travel until it subsides to ensure your own safety.
