The Power of Hope and Resilience: Michael Rosen’s Journey through Covid

An Unpredictable Battle

Children’s author Michael Rosen recently shared his experience of being given a 50% chance of waking up from an induced coma during his battle with Covid. In a special episode of the BBC show “The Repair Shop” dedicated to the National Health Service (NHS) and its staff, Rosen praised the NHS for its power to serve everyone.

Rosen vividly recalled the pivotal conversation that took place before he entered the coma: “‘Will I wake up?’ I asked. ‘Well, you’ve got a 50/50 chance,’ they replied. I then asked, ‘What if I don’t sign?’ Their response was ‘zero.’ So, I signed. And there I was, for approximately 40 days.”

A Diary of Strength and Support

During his appearance on “The Repair Shop”, Rosen brought along his NHS patient diary, filled with the notes nurses had written while he was in an induced coma. The diary, which was falling apart, was subsequently restored by expert bookbinder Christopher Shaw. Shaw also created a special rainbow scrapbook, filled with handwritten letters of support that Rosen had received from children while he was in the hospital.

Rosen, the renowned author of books such as “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” and “Sad Book”, spent over 40 days in intensive care after contracting Covid. He described the experience as starting with a feeling of grogginess and flu-like symptoms, gradually deteriorating until his wife, Emma, drove him to the hospital. He recalled the journey, with the lights flashing by in the night, as a blurry memory.

A Testimony of Gratitude

Since his recovery, Rosen has written a book entitled “Many Different Kinds Of Love”, which chronicles his experience with the virus. In January, he marched alongside striking nurses from University College Hospital to Downing Street as an act of pure gratitude for saving his life.

Reflecting on the power of the NHS, Rosen shared his personal connection to the service: “I’m born in 1946, before the NHS existed. My mother lost a child during the war due to the lack of care and medicine. So, they had this emotional attachment to the dream of free healthcare from cradle to grave.”

Lessons Learned and the Power of Resilience

Michael Rosen’s journey through Covid serves as a testament to the power of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. His story highlights the unpredictability of the virus and the importance of the healthcare system in providing lifesaving care.

Beyond his personal experience, Rosen’s recounting of his journey sparks broader philosophical questions. How do we navigate the uncertainty and fear that accompanies a life-threatening illness? How do we find the strength to keep fighting when the odds seem insurmountable? How does our healthcare system shape our understanding of collective responsibility and the importance of universal access to healthcare?

Through his storytelling and public appearances, Michael Rosen reminds us of the value of empathy, compassion, and gratitude. His experience compels us to reflect on the significance of resilience in overcoming the challenges that life throws our way.

As we celebrate the 75th birthday of the NHS, Rosen’s story serves as a reminder of its enduring impact and the lives it has touched. It encourages us to continue supporting and advocating for accessible and equitable healthcare for all.
