Dr. Mod Helmy: A Forgotten Hero Celebrated by Google Doodle

The Life and Heroism of Dr. Mohammed Helmy

Dr. Mohammed Helmy, an Egyptian-German medical doctor, is being honored today by Google Doodle on what would have been his 122nd birthday. Dr. Helmy is renowned for his courage and selflessness during one of humanity’s darkest periods – the Holocaust. While being persecuted by the Nazis himself, he risked his own life to rescue Jewish people from certain death.

Born on July 25, 1901, in Khartoum, Sudan, Dr. Helmy had a unique heritage as his father was Egyptian and his mother was German. In 1922, he moved to Germany to pursue his medical studies, specializing in urology and eventually becoming the head of the urology department at Robert Koch Hospital (later renamed Krankenhaus Moabit).

However, with the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933, Dr. Helmy faced persecution due to his North African heritage. Like many Jewish staff members, he was dismissed from the hospital. The discrimination against him escalated, leading to his arrest and imprisonment at the Wülzburg prison camp in 1939 and 1940, where he fell gravely ill.

Although his release from the prison camp was primarily due to his deteriorating health, he still faced the burden of reporting to the police twice a day and proving he was unfit for internment. Incredibly, despite the constant scrutiny and danger he faced, Dr. Helmy courageously provided assistance to those in need during the Holocaust.

He wrote fake sick notes to help Germans escape labor conscription and military service, as well as aiding foreign workers in returning to their home countries. Despite these extraordinary acts of kindness, the most remarkable feat was his assistance to a Jewish patient and her family members. Dr. Helmy sheltered them at a cabin he owned in Buch, just outside of Berlin, successfully hiding them even while under direct police investigation.

Even after the war, Dr. Helmy’s struggles continued. The Nazis had prevented him from marrying his German fiancée, but they eventually wed. He continued to practice medicine until his death on January 10, 1982, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and bravery.

The Recognition of Dr. Helmy’s Heroism

It was not until 2013 that the Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial, recognized Dr. Mohammed Helmy as a “Righteous Among the Nations.” This honorific title is bestowed upon non-Jews who risked their own lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Dr. Helmy was the first Muslim Arab to receive this recognition, shining a light on the important role of Muslim heroes during a time of immense suffering and prejudice.

The Google Doodle Celebrating Dr. Helmy

The Google Doodle, created by Berlin-based artist Noa Snir, beautifully captures the spirit of Dr. Helmy’s heroic acts. It depicts Dr. Helmy wearing a white lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck. The background is split into two halves – one representing Egypt, where he was born, and the other depicting a hospital building. In the center, in front of the word “Google,” are four people with suitcases, symbolizing the Jewish lives Dr. Helmy helped save.

Noa Snir expressed her intention to convey hope and strength in the doodle, despite the difficult times in which Dr. Helmy operated. She skillfully incorporates a hint of war while emphasizing the heroism and humanity that prevailed in the face of adversity.
