How Sam Smith Turned a Disability into a Winning Weapon on The Traitors

An Unexpected Opportunity

Sam Smith, a well-known comedian in the Kiwi TV world, recently gained recognition for his starring role on The Traitors NZ. Prior to the show, Sam had worked behind the scenes as a writer and “audience warm-up guy” for various TV programs. However, being the main character on a reality show was a new and exciting experience for him. He recounts how he initially thought the producers wanted him for a different role, but was pleasantly surprised to find himself in the spotlight.

A Winning Strategy

Sam entered The Traitors NZ with the goal of survival, fully aware of the manipulation that comes with reality TV. His determination and trust in his fellow contestants paid off, as he ended up sharing the $59,100 prize money with Anna Reeve, another winner of the show. The financial boost allowed Sam to create a home office, provide separate rooms for his two sons, and embark on a recent trip to Europe. Interestingly, the grant that made the trip possible was specifically for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition that Sam has been living with since 2015.

Overcoming Adversity

Sam’s journey with MS began during his paternity leave after the birth of his first son. Losing sensation in his arm and leg led to a diagnosis of the chronic disease. His struggles continued when he experienced another MS attack and developed optic neuritis, which rendered him legally blind. These challenges forced Sam to give up his profession as a dentist. Despite the difficulties, Sam has embraced his role as an ambassador for MS Auckland, advocating for awareness and support. His participation in The Traitors served as a testament to his resilience and determination to lead a normal life.

A Unique Bond with Anna

During the show, Sam formed a special connection with Anna Reeve, who also had a disability, alopecia. Both conditions are autoimmune disorders, and Sam believes that their shared experiences contributed to their triumphant journey on The Traitors. Sam and Anna continue to maintain a strong bond, reflecting on their victory and cherishing the support they provided each other during their time on the show.

A Message of Inspiration

Sam’s triumph on The Traitors is not just a personal victory, but also an inspiration to others. He is determined to raise awareness about MS and show that individuals with disabilities can lead fulfilling and functional lives. Sam’s post-show endeavors include writing children’s books and hosting a podcast dedicated to highlighting the achievements of the blind and low vision community. Through his resilience and success, Sam aims to instill hope and encourage others to overcome their obstacles.

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week, which is currently taking place, provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about the condition and contribute to initiatives supporting those affected. For more information or to donate, please visit msnz.org.nz or msakl.org.nz.
