Rishi Sunak Approves Honours List Despite Partygate Scandal Criticisms

Introduction

The Partygate scandal continues to haunt the British government as the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, faces a police inquiry and parliamentary investigation while being accused of rewarding his close aides with honours. Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, allegedly approved a list of more than 40 honours and peerages for Johnson’s closest allies despite the ongoing investigations. This move by Sunak has not been well-received among the public and the Conservative Party.

The Honours List

In Johnson’s recently announced honours list, his closest aides such as Martin Reynolds, Dan Rosenfield, and Jack Doyle, were given rewards for their role during the COVID-19 pandemic. These individuals were also present during the Partygate era of controversy, which adds to the criticisms of the honours list. Shelley Williams-Walker, who reportedly was the DJ at a Downing Street event during the lockdown, was made a dame while Rosie Bate-Williams and Sarah Vaughan-Brown, both press advisers, were made CBEs and an OBE respectively.

Other notable individuals include Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Leader of the House of Commons, who received a knighthood while Priti Patel, the former Home Secretary, was awarded a damehood. Andrea Jenkyns, Amanda Milling, Shaun Bailey, and Ben Elliot also received damehoods and knighthoods. However, Nadine Dorries, Alok Sharma, Nigel Adams, and Alister Jack were prevented from receiving honours by the Prime Minister.

Criticisms and Response

The whole honours list has faced immense backlash from opposition parties and some Conservative MPs. Labour called the list a “rewards list for those who tried to cover up rule-breaking.” Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have called it “corruption pure and simple.” The Conservative Party’s own source criticized the list, labeling it as a “list of bullies and sycophants.” While a former cabinet minister labeled the day of honours announcement as “put out the trash day.”

However, No 10 defended the honours list, stating that Sunak was just following “convention” and refused to acknowledge the criticism. Despite the criticisms, Sunak has refused not to block the list entirely. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Prime Minister’s honours list has fueled the existing questions over the Partygate scandal.

Conclusion and Advice

The current scenario is not good for the British government. The Partygate scandal has been a severe blow to the Conservative Party’s reputation and credibility. Therefore, the government must take corrective measures to restore public trust and confidence. The honours list further aggravates the situation, which is why it is necessary to review it impartially and reconsider it in light of the Partygate scandal.

The individuals involved in the scandal should be held accountable for their actions, and those who tried to cover up the rule-breaking must be reprimanded accordingly. The government needs to be more transparent and forthcoming in its dealings as this situation has severely damaged the image of the ruling party.

In conclusion, the Partygate scandal and the honours list have raised serious questions about the British government’s integrity and accountability. Therefore, it is the government’s responsibility to address these concerns and try to regain the public’s trust. Only then can the government effectively govern and handle the various and complex challenges facing the country.
