Thornton’s coolness and devotion to duty under heavy shell and mortar fire greatly assisted his Battery Commander in bringing down fire on the enemy.

Return to Glory

After the war, Thornton returned to civilian life and to the place he loved, Ibrox. He resumed his brilliant goal-scoring form, scoring 25 goals in 35 starts during the 1946/47 season, helping Rangers win the league title and the first-ever Scottish League Cup. Thornton continued his success, winning his first Scottish Cup medal in 1948 when Rangers defeated Morton 1-0.

A Legendary Career

Thornton reached the peak of his career in the 1948/49 season, scoring 34 goals as Rangers achieved a historic Scottish domestic treble. He continued to score goals until his retirement in June 1954, ending his 18-year career with Rangers and 390 first team appearances. Throughout his career, Thornton represented Scotland seven times, scoring one goal in a friendly against Denmark. Remarkably, he was never once booked or sent off. After retiring from playing, Thornton enjoyed managerial spells at both Dundee and Partick Thistle before returning to Rangers as Assistant Manager to Davie White in September 1968. He briefly served as caretaker manager before the appointment of Willie Waddell. Thornton remained at the club as Assistant Manager, matchday host, and trophy room tour guide until his death on August 26, 1991, at the age of 71.
