There is speculation about a potential move for Kasper Schmeichel by Celtic, following his shock departure from Nice on a free transfer. The legendary Danish goalkeeper joined the French club from Leicester City last summer, after spending over a decade with the Foxes. However, Schmeichel is now a free agent and could be open to a move.
One potential obstacle in signing Schmeichel is his age, as he is currently 36 years old, the same age as Celtic‘s current goalkeeper, Joe Hart. Additionally, his high wages and the desire of the club to develop a younger goalkeeper may also factor into Celtic‘s decision.
Intriguing Connection with Brendan Rodgers
What makes Schmeichel’s availability as a transfer option even more interesting is his shared history with Celtic‘s manager, Brendan Rodgers. Both were part of Leicester City’s historic Premier League title-winning squad in the 2015-2016 season. Rodgers has previously praised Schmeichel, calling him one of the best managers he has ever worked with.
A statement from Nice read, “OGC Nice and Kasper Schmeichel have agreed to terminate the Danish international’s contract by mutual consent. The 36-year-old goalkeeper arrived in Nice last summer and made 46 appearances for the club in all competitions. The club wishes him every success for the rest of his career.”
Considerations for Celtic
With the departure of Schmeichel, Nice has clearly indicated a changing of the guard in their goalkeeper position by opting for Marcin Bulka, who joined from PSG this summer, as their new first-choice goalkeeper.
For Celtic, the potential signing of Schmeichel could provide an experienced and reliable option between the posts. Despite his age, Schmeichel has shown no signs of slowing down and has proven himself at the highest level with both Leicester City and the Danish national team.
Furthermore, Schmeichel’s wealth of experience and leadership qualities could greatly benefit Celtic, especially in European competitions, where his expertise in high-stakes matches and ability to organize a defense could prove invaluable.
Final Thoughts
While the prospect of a reunion between Schmeichel and Rodgers certainly makes for an intriguing storyline, Celtic must carefully consider their options and long-term goals before making a decision. Investing in a younger goalkeeper who can be groomed for the future may align better with the club’s vision.
However, if Celtic believes that Schmeichel’s immediate impact and leadership can help them achieve their goals in the short term, this could be a move worth pursuing. Ultimately, the decision will depend on the club’s evaluation of their current squad, financial considerations, and the level of ambition they have for the upcoming season.
As the transfer window deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Celtic to see whether they will make a move for Schmeichel or opt for a different direction in their pursuit of a goalkeeper.
