Apple Unveils its Latest Hardware – Augmented Reality Headset: Vision Pro
Apple has introduced the latest version of its hardware – a much-anticipated augmented reality headset called the Vision Pro, marking the company’s first significant hardware release in nearly a decade. During the initial announcement at a developers’ conference at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, the company’s CEO Tim Cook emphasized that the new device seamlessly blends the real and virtual worlds.
The Vision Pro: A Revolutionary Device
The Vision Pro is a device that uses “augmented reality,” allowing users to superimpose virtual objects on the surrounding real world, enabling them to mix reality with the virtual world while looking through its screen. The headset costs $3,499 and has a battery life of up to two hours. It is schedule to be released in early 2023 in the United States. According to Zoe Kleinman, a technology editor at BBC who was among the first people to try the product, the Apple Vision Pro headset looks more like a pair of ski goggles rather than a typical virtual reality headset.
Appeal to Millions?
Senior editor at MacRumors, Hartley Charlton, stated that it may not appeal to mainstream consumers initially due to its high price point and current shortcomings as a first-generation device, such as the separate wired battery pack. Thomas Husson of Forrester Research believes that while the overall augmented reality/virtual reality has been overhyped in recent years, if someone stated a decade ago that people would be willing to pay nearly $2,000 for a mobile phone, few would have believed it. Apple‘s past achievements in “overcoming skepticism” with new devices may help to persuade people to invest in the new gadget.
Apple‘s iOS17
In addition to introducing the Vision Pro, Apple has revealed its latest iPhone operating system, iOS17, which includes new features such as “contact posters,” which link an image to a person’s number when you call them, and “live voicemail,” that transcribe an answerphone message to a message on the screen. The iOS17 also includes “Check-In,” a feature that tracks and shares your location with friends or family members.
The Future of Augmented Reality
While the overall augmented reality/mixed reality space has yet to take off fully, Apple‘s Vision Pro may mark the start of a new era in wearable technology, giving users the chance to see, hear and interact with digital content in real life. The use of augmented reality in everyday life, such as the chance to personalize and enhance ordinary experiences, may give the device a wider appeal for a product pitched as “part of your daily life.”
