The New Futurama Successfully Reboots the Show for 2023
Futurama, the beloved animated sci-fi sitcom, is back after a 10-year hiatus. Premiering today on Hulu in the US and Disney+ elsewhere, the show’s 11th season brings back all the satirical humor and wit that made it a hit in the past. Despite the long break, the new episodes successfully reboot the show in 3023, still 1,000 years in the future, proving that Futurama is just as relevant today as it was a decade ago.
A Brief History
Futurama first aired almost a quarter of a century ago in 1999, emerging from the shadow of its popular predecessor, The Simpsons. The show began with four excellent seasons, featuring award-winning episodes like “Roswell That Ends Well” and “Godfellas.” The main characters, Fry and Leela, along with the foul-mouthed robot Bender, quickly became fan favorites. For those unfamiliar with the show, the premise revolves around Fry, a pizza delivery boy who was cryogenically frozen on New Year’s Eve in 1999 and wakes up in the year 2999. The new season picks up after time has been stopped for a few years, and the universe gets rebooted by Professor Farnsworth, allowing the characters to seamlessly continue their adventures.
A Satirical Take on the Future
In the latest season, Futurama continues its tradition of mocking itself for its numerous cancellations and revivals. The characters even manage to convince “Fulu” executives (who are robots) to bring back a canceled robot soap opera beloved by Fry. The self-awareness and meta-commentary add another layer of humor to the show.
Despite being set in the future, Futurama manages to reference the present day in its episodes. It nods to popular shows like Black Mirror and tackles topics like cryptocurrency scams, 3D printing, and even a Covid-like outbreak. The show excels at blending sci-fi elements with social commentary, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.
A Battle for Survival and Relevance
Like many shows and movies in recent years, Futurama faced challenges during its revival. Last year, John DiMaggio, the voice actor for Bender, withdrew from the show as part of a dispute over pay. This led to a backlash from fans, with the hashtag #BenderGate trending. Fortunately, the matter was resolved, and DiMaggio returned to the role.
Futurama‘s revival comes at a time when other animated space comedies like Rick and Morty and Star Trek: Lower Decks are gaining popularity. While Futurama is less dark than Rick and Morty and less science-focused than Star Trek, its influences overlap, and the increased interest in animated sci-fi shows has helped pave the way for its return.
The Future Looks Bright for Futurama
The new season of Futurama consists of ten episodes, and a 12th season has already been confirmed, promising even more adventures in the future. The show’s ability to blend timeless humor with satirical commentary on contemporary issues makes it a fan favorite that continues to stand the test of time. With its successful reboot, Futurama proves that it still has a place in the hearts of fans and remains as relevant and entertaining as ever.
